The Process of Calibration
Instrumentation calibration is the primary process used to maintain instrument accuracy. Calibration is the process of configuring an instrument to provide a result for a sample within an acceptable range. Decreasing the risk of inaccurate measurements must be built into instrument design, but the need for calibration can never be completely eliminated.
Calibrating an instrument is done by using it to measure samples of known values, or “calibrators.” The results are then used to correctly establish the particular values of what the instrument measures. An easy example of this is putting a one-kilogram sample weight on a scale that measures mass, and adjusting the scale until the readout is correct. Much calibration is much more complex and detailed, as many instruments must make more delicate and exact measurements. However, the process is the same in that the instrument is influenced to make more accurate readings.
